British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a several entry passages down to the facility... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action demonstrates the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces participating in this strike for their skill and their bravery," he added. "They were among a great many British personnel deployed over the holidays. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, demonstrates how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."

In December, the United States armed forces carried out what it called a "major assault" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an ambush killed two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
